Lifestyle inflation

Lifestyle inflation is the tendency for spending to rise as income rises, so a raise is absorbed by a bigger home, a newer car or more expensive habits instead of improving your finances. It happens gradually, which is why it is easy to miss.

It matters because earning more does not automatically build wealth; the gap between income and spending does. Deciding in advance how much of a raise to save is one way to stop that gap from closing.
