Principal

Principal is the original amount of money borrowed, lent or invested, kept separate from any interest added on top. In a loan repayment, part of each payment covers interest and the rest reduces the principal. On an investment, the principal is what you contributed before any growth.

People often overlook how slowly the principal falls when payments are spread over a long term, which is why a comfortable monthly figure can still leave a debt outstanding for years.
