Emergency fund

An emergency fund is money set aside to cover essential expenses if income stops or a large unexpected bill arrives. It is normally held somewhere easy to reach, such as a separate savings account, so it can be accessed within days rather than months.

People often treat it as ordinary savings and spend it on holidays or planned purchases. Its whole purpose is to stop a surprise from turning into expensive debt.
