Sinking fund

A sinking fund is money set aside gradually for a known future expense, so the cost does not land all at once. Replacing a car, paying an annual insurance premium or covering a holiday are typical uses.

It matters because predictable costs are the ones that most often break a budget when they arrive unplanned. Working out the total and dividing it by the months available is usually enough to set the amount.
