Liquidity

Liquidity describes how quickly an asset can be turned into cash without losing value. Money in an everyday bank account is highly liquid, while property is not, because selling takes time and may only be possible at a reduced price.

Emergency funds are usually kept in liquid form for exactly this reason, even when the return is modest. People sometimes lock money into longer-term products with better rates and then find they cannot reach it when a real emergency arrives.
