Worked examples
Real numbers run through this calculator. Open any example to load it into the form above and change it.
A $15,000 car with $3,000 already saved
A $500 monthly deposit against a $12,000 gap.
You enter
- Car budget
- $15,000.00
- Saved so far
- $3,000.00
- Monthly deposit
- $500.00
You get
- Months until you can buy
- 24
- Still to save
- $12,000.00
- Saved so far
- 20.0%
The gap is $12,000 and $500 a month clears it in exactly 24 months; the $3,000 already banked is 20% of the budget.
A $12,000 car bought from scratch
$400 a month with nothing saved yet.
You enter
- Car budget
- $12,000.00
- Saved so far
- $0.00
- Monthly deposit
- $400.00
You get
- Months until you can buy
- 30
- Still to save
- $12,000.00
- Saved so far
- 0.0%
The gap is the same $12,000 as the first example, but with no head start and a smaller deposit the timeline stretches from 24 months to 30.

Frequently asked questions
Does my trade-in go in the car budget or in saved so far?
The cash value of a trade-in belongs in saved so far, because it is money you already have rather than money you still need. The car budget is the full price of the car you intend to buy. Keeping the two separate is what makes “still to save” and the progress percentage mean something.
Should the car budget include insurance, tax and registration?
Include them if you want the target to represent the total cost of getting on the road — add the first year of insurance and any registration or transfer fees to the price of the car. If you would rather pay those from monthly income as they fall due, leave them out and read the timeline as “when I can pay for the car itself”.
Why does the calculator ignore interest on my savings?
A car fund is usually spent within a few years and the balance is small on average, so the interest is minor next to the price of a car — and leaving it out produces a slightly pessimistic, safer date. If your timeline is long, run the same numbers through the Savings Timeline Calculator, which compounds a monthly rate, to see how much earlier you could buy.
How do I work out a deposit for a fixed date?
Go the other way round: put the budget, the months you have and what you have saved into the Monthly Savings Calculator and it returns the deposit you need each month. If that number is more than you can realistically spare, the honest options are a cheaper car, selling the current one sooner, or accepting a later date.
