Envelope budgeting

Envelope budgeting means dividing your spending money into categories and limiting each one to a set amount for the period. Traditionally the cash went into labelled envelopes; today the same idea is often kept in separate accounts or digital categories.

It works because you can see a category running out before you overspend it. The trade-off is that it demands regular attention and can be awkward when income or bills arrive irregularly.
