Essential spending

Essential spending covers the costs you must meet to keep your life running: housing, food, utilities, transport to work, basic insurance and minimum debt payments. What counts as essential is personal and depends on your circumstances, household and location.

The idea matters because a budget is easier to keep when essentials are protected and cuts fall on optional spending first. People sometimes label everything essential and leave themselves no room to adjust.
