Effective tax rate

Your effective tax rate is the total tax you pay divided by your total income, expressed as a percentage. It blends together every rate that applies to you, including higher rates charged on parts of what you earn.

It gives a truer picture of your tax burden than a single headline rate, though the exact calculation depends on where you live and on which income and reliefs are counted. It is frequently confused with the marginal rate.
