Gross income

Gross income is everything you are paid before any deduction is taken out: wages or salary, plus other money you receive such as freelance fees, tips, bonuses or rent.

It is the figure most job adverts and lenders quote, so it is useful for comparing offers. People often treat it as money they can spend, but deductions can take a large share before it reaches their account.
