Net income

Net income is what is left of your gross income after taxes and other deductions have been subtracted. For an individual it is the amount that actually arrives in your bank account; for a business it means revenue minus costs.

It matters because net income, not gross, is what your budget has to work with. A common error is planning spending around a headline salary figure that never lands in full.
