Opportunity cost

Opportunity cost is the value of the best alternative you gave up when you chose one option over another. Spending a sum on a holiday carries an opportunity cost of whatever else that money could have done, such as reducing debt or earning interest.

It never appears on a receipt, which is why it is easy to ignore. Considering it does not mean never spending; it means knowing what a choice trades away.
