Real return

Real return is an investment return after inflation is taken out, so it reflects the change in what your money can actually buy. If an account earns less than the rate of inflation, the real return is negative even though the balance grew.

Nominal return is the headline figure before that adjustment, and the two can point in opposite directions. People often celebrate a positive nominal return while quietly losing ground.
